The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic death of one of its senior lecturers, Dr. Kwabena Koforobour Agyemang, and his teaching assistant, Mr. Peter Amoadu-Asmah, in a fatal road accident.
According to the University, the incident occurred at Third Ridge along the Cape Coast–Accra highway, a stretch of road known for heavy traffic and occasional accidents. The institution described the loss as a devastating blow to the academic community, noting that both individuals were highly valued members of the Department of Geography and Regional Planning.
Dr. Agyemang, a Senior Lecturer in the department, was widely regarded as a committed academic whose work in teaching, research, and mentorship made a lasting impact on both colleagues and students. University management praised his dedication to academic excellence and service, adding that his absence would be deeply felt across the institution.
Also lost in the accident was Mr. Peter Amoadu-Asmah, a National Service Personnel serving as a teaching assistant in the same department. He was described as an outstanding young scholar who had recently completed his undergraduate studies at UCC, graduating as the overall best student in his cohort. His promising academic trajectory made his passing particularly painful for the university community.
In its statement, UCC extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased, assuring them of its support, thoughts, and prayers during this difficult time. The University also called for calm and sensitivity in public discussions surrounding the tragedy, urging the media and public to handle coverage of the incident with restraint and respect for the bereaved families.
The institution emphasized that both individuals played important roles in its academic environment and that their contributions would be remembered by students, faculty, and staff.
As investigations into the accident continue, the University community remains in mourning, with flags expected to fly at half-mast in honour of the deceased.
