Zoomlion, FeDEMS and NADMO Partner for Cleanup Exercise to Combat Flooding in Accra

Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the Federation of District Environmental Management Staff (FeDEMS) have joined forces with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to undertake a major cleanup exercise in Accra aimed at reducing flooding and promoting proper waste management practices.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to improve sanitation in the capital and address the recurring flooding challenges that affect several communities during the rainy season.

Speaking during the exercise, the Greater Accra Regional Director of NADMO, Dennis Nartey Adjannor, identified the indiscriminate disposal of refuse into drains and waterways as one of the leading causes of flooding in the city.

According to him, blocked drains prevent the free flow of rainwater, causing waterways to overflow and inundate roads, homes, and businesses during heavy downpours.

Mr. Adjannor stressed the need for residents to take personal responsibility for maintaining clean surroundings and supporting sanitation initiatives aimed at protecting lives and property.

He urged the public to desist from dumping waste into gutters and drainage channels, noting that sustainable flood prevention requires collective action from both authorities and citizens.

The cleanup exercise involved the desilting of drains, collection of waste, and public education on proper waste disposal practices. Organisers say such interventions are critical to improving environmental sanitation and reducing the risk of flood-related disasters in the Greater Accra Region.

The collaboration between Zoomlion, FeDEMS, and NADMO reflects a broader commitment to strengthening environmental management and building more resilient communities across the capital.
