Reports of Illness and Social Media Absence

Alexx Ekubo’s death follows months of public concern over his prolonged absence from social media and public events.

The actor had reportedly not posted on Instagram since December 2024, leading to widespread speculation about his health and wellbeing. Recently surfaced videos showing him interacting with children reignited concern among fans, many of whom observed that he appeared noticeably slimmer and subdued.

Several reports suggest the actor had been privately battling a serious illness, with different media outlets mentioning complications related to cancer. However, conflicting reports have circulated regarding the exact nature of the illness.

Career and Legacy in Nollywood

Born Alex Ekubo-Okwaraeke, the actor rose to prominence after emerging as the first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition before establishing himself as one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces.

He became widely known for starring in romantic dramas and comedy films such as Weekend Getaway, The Bling Lagosians, Lagos Cougars and Omo Ghetto: The Saga.

Over the years, Alexx Ekubo built a reputation for his charisma, fashion sense and strong screen presence, becoming a fan favourite among younger audiences across Africa.

Personal Life and Public Attention

The actor’s personal life also frequently attracted public attention, especially following the collapse of his engagement to US-based model Fancy Acholonu in 2021.

In later interviews, Acholonu publicly apologised to the actor and reaffirmed her affection for him after their highly publicised breakup.

Before his death, Alexx Ekubo had also spoken openly about societal pressure regarding marriage, stating in previous social media posts that he was focused on building financial success and advancing his acting career rather than rushing into marriage.

Tributes Continue Across Social Media

Since news of his death broke, tributes have continued pouring in from colleagues, fans and entertainment personalities across Nigeria and beyond, with many describing him as talented, humble and influential within the Nollywood industry.

His death marks another major loss for the Nigerian film industry, where he remained one of the most recognised actors of his generation.
