Ghana announces free visas for all African countries from May 25

President John Mahama has announced that Ghana will implement a free visa policy for all African citizens, effective May 25, to commemorate Africa Day. This landmark decision is expected to significantly boost regional integration, tourism, trade, and cultural exchange across the continent.

Under the new policy, travellers from any African country will be able to apply online for an e-visa at no cost, removing financial barriers that have long hindered free movement across the continent. The introduction of a free electronic visa system is also aimed at simplifying travel procedures, reducing bureaucratic delays, and encouraging more Africans to explore opportunities in Ghana for business, education, and leisure.

The announcement was made during bilateral talks with Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa on the sidelines of an African Union summit. The meeting highlighted growing cooperation between African nations and reinforced commitments toward strengthening intra-African mobility and economic collaboration.

"I'm also pleased to announce that effective 25th May 2026, when we commemorate Africa Day, Ghana will commence a free visa regime for all Africans. Africans travelling to Ghana will receive their e-visas online, free of charge. But between Ghana and Zimbabwe, in Laos, we have a visa-free environment already."

"You can travel to each other's countries without needing a visa. You just hop onto the plane and arrive in each other's country," he said on Thursday. His remarks underscored existing visa-free agreements between certain African nations, while positioning Ghana’s new policy as a broader step toward continent-wide accessibility.

While the visa fee will be waived, the government stressed that security would not be compromised. Authorities emphasized that the initiative is being implemented alongside robust digital infrastructure to ensure safe and efficient processing of applications.

Mahama assured the public that effective screening systems have been put in place to assess all applicants before travel authorisation is granted. These systems are expected to include identity verification, background checks, and coordination with regional security agencies to maintain national safety standards.

Currently, only a handful of African countries, including Rwanda, Seychelles, and The Gambia, offer visa-free access to all Africans. Ghana’s move places it among a progressive group of nations championing open borders within Africa and aligns with broader African Union goals such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which seeks to enhance economic integration and mobility across member states.

The policy is widely seen as a bold step toward realizing the long-envisioned goal of a more unified and interconnected Africa, where citizens can move freely across borders with fewer restrictions.
