The University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has successfully carried out four additional kidney transplant procedures, bringing the total number of successful transplants performed at the facility to 15.
The latest achievement marks another major milestone in Ghana’s growing organ transplant programme and underscores the increasing capacity of local medical professionals to deliver complex, life-saving specialist care.
In a post shared on X, UGMC announced that the four successful surgeries have raised its cumulative transplant count to 15 since the centre performed its first kidney transplant in June 2024.
The development represents significant progress for Ghana’s healthcare sector, particularly in a field where many patients have traditionally been compelled to seek expensive treatment abroad.
Kidney transplantation is widely regarded as one of the most effective treatment options for patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease, often providing better long-term health outcomes and improved quality of life compared to prolonged dialysis treatment.
UGMC’s expanding transplant programme is expected to strengthen confidence in Ghana’s specialist healthcare system and reinforce the facility’s position as a leading centre for advanced medical care in the country and across the sub-region.
The medical centre has not disclosed details about the latest transplant recipients but confirmed that all four procedures were successfully completed.
Healthcare observers have welcomed the achievement as another important step towards establishing a sustainable and world-class organ transplant programme in Ghana, while improving access to advanced medical interventions locally.
