President and political appointees donate GH¢6.1m of their salaries to GMTF

The President, Vice-President, and political appointees serving at the Presidency have collectively donated GH¢6.1 million to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahacare, in a move aimed at supporting healthcare financing and expanding access to treatment for vulnerable Ghanaians.

The donation was officially presented during a ceremony held at the Jubilee House on Monday, June 15, 2026, where a cheque covering the full amount was handed over to the leadership of the Trust Fund.

The contribution represents one of the most significant collective salary-based donations by government officials in recent years and forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare support systems across the country.

According to officials at the Presidency, the GH¢6.1 million donation was generated through a combination of salary contributions and administrative deductions involving political appointees.

The amount includes six months of salary voluntarily contributed by President John Dramani Mahama, alongside one month's salary donated by political appointees working at the Presidency.

Additional funds were raised through deductions imposed on government appointees who failed to comply with the stipulated deadline for asset declaration requirements.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony, Nana Oye indicated that the Controller and Accountant-General's Department had already transferred the funds to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund before the official handover ceremony.
