Accra court denies bail in GH¢14 million gold robbery case

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded six individuals into custody over their alleged involvement in a high-value robbery involving 12.5 kilogrammes of gold valued at GH¢14,387,096, along with an additional GH¢400,000 in cash.

The accused persons, who have all pleaded not guilty, are facing charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.

Presiding over the case, Dennis Eyram Benson refused oral bail applications made by defence lawyers, ordering that the accused persons be remanded into lawful custody pending further proceedings.

The court subsequently adjourned the case to April 27, 2026, when the accused persons are expected to reappear.

The six accused persons have been identified as:

  • Salim Muhammed
  • Alhassan Illiasu
  • Hamza Agerego
  • Abdul Samed Bonsiabu Larry
  • Fatao Ibrahim
  • Abubarkar Sadique

A seventh suspect, Baba Chika, is currently at large and being actively sought by the police.

According to the prosecution, the robbery allegedly took place in November 2024 during the transportation of a large sum of money and gold from a jewellery shop to a bank.

Prosecutors told the court that the suspects reportedly used a Toyota Highlander vehicle with registration number GN 7357-19 to carry out the operation. During the attack, they allegedly fired multiple gunshots into the air to intimidate their targets and facilitate the robbery.

An occupant of the vehicle transporting the valuables was reportedly shot in the left leg during the incident, highlighting the violent nature of the attack.

The case has drawn public attention due to the high value of the stolen items and the level of coordination allegedly involved in the operation. Law enforcement authorities continue to pursue the remaining suspect while investigations into the matter proceed.
