Police arrest University of Ghana security guard over viral assault video

The Ghana Police Service has arrested a security guard of the University of Ghana who was captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting an individual, sparking public outrage.

The suspect, identified as Ebenezer Annor Darko, was apprehended by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team (CVET), a specialised unit responsible for handling digital evidence and cyber-related investigations.

According to police, the suspect is currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations into the incident, which has generated widespread discussion on social media regarding the conduct of private security personnel and the use of excessive force.

Authorities indicated that further updates on the case will be communicated to the public as investigations progress, including any potential charges that may be filed.

The incident has also reignited concerns about accountability, professionalism, and oversight within private security operations, particularly in public institutions such as universities.

In a related advisory, the Ghana Police Service cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands, urging citizens to exercise restraint and rely on lawful processes when dealing with suspected offenders.

Police emphasised that maintaining public order and justice requires adherence to due process, warning that acts of vigilante justice could further complicate legal proceedings and undermine the rule of law.
